Miracle League started this week for both kids, first year this year! Brayden has had no exposure to any type of team sport so this was a completely new thing for him. Bennett played T-ball for the school district last year and is playing again this year as well so not as much of a challenge for him but a great opportunity to play with no expectations and be exposed to other children with similar or different abilities. Bennett did great and was actually a big helper on the team and for that I am very thankful as he helped his brother too. As I said previously, this was Brayden's first experience in an "organized" team sport where he has to follow directions and there's only one way to play the game. He LOVED hitting the ball and would get the biggest smile on his face, but struggled running bases or waiting for the next hitter. He also struggled with playing outfield as he just wanted to keep hitting the ball!! His buddy "C" was amazing with him and I am thankful for the Miracle League for pairing buddies based on abilities and needs. I might owe them a bottle of wine if not new tennis shoes for all the running they're going to do after that one! Towards the end of the game, Bennett helped Brayden around the bases and showed him how to play. That sibling love I think really helps in this household though it's not always there! There are many times where Bennett will get upset with Brayden because he does something to wreck a creation or a toy that Bennett built or is playing with and Bennett will get upset, rightfully so. I try to use them as teaching moments for both kids but to watch Bennett help Brayden around the bases and give him a big hug at the end and say "good job Brayden!" really melted my heart. There are times where Bennett will give up what he's doing to cheer his brother up or start making silly faces to get Brayden to laugh or to distract him. It's little things like that that make or break the day and help show the bright side to raising kids with special needs.
Today is our crazy day of running everywhere and basically living out of my car. It would be nice if we had services such as PT/OT/SLP closer that took state insurance, but right now we're driving 45 minutes one way for services. As long as they are getting what they need that's what matters to me. All I can say is thank goodness for coffee!!!
